THE FOLLY OF REBELLION AND THE WISDOM OF HUMBLE TRUST: CHOOSING THE WAY OF LIFE OVER MADNESS By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
— Proverbs 1:7
Introduction
Across the pages of Scripture, God consistently distinguishes between wisdom and folly, obedience and rebellion, humility and pride. In every generation, this distinction remains unchanged. What changes are the forms through which rebellion expresses itself and the seductive voices that persuade men and women to reject correction. In these present times, God declares plainly that He finds no pleasure in fools—not because He lacks compassion, but because folly is a chosen posture of rebellion against divine truth.
The message before us is sobering and urgent. It reveals that foolishness is not intellectual deficiency, but spiritual defiance. Fools are those who refuse instruction, despise correction, and insist on their own way, even when that way leads to destruction. Such rebellion opens the door to demonic influence, deception, and ultimately the loss of the soul. Though God does not intend for humanity to choose madness, many do so willingly because pride promises autonomy and comfort promises ease.
Yet within this warning is great mercy. God reminds His people that He is a good Father, full of compassion, who listens to the cries of the needy and offers salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. This lesson explores the nature of biblical foolishness, the deception of worldly wisdom, the danger of trusting in riches and self-power, and the safety found in humility, obedience, and gratitude before God. It calls believers to reject rebellion and walk firmly in the straight and narrow way that leads to life.
The Nature of Foolishness as Rebellion Against God
“A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.”
— Proverbs 15:5
God defines foolishness not by lack of intelligence, but by refusal of instruction. A fool is one who rebels against God by rejecting correction and despising wisdom. Such rebellion is not passive; it is an active resistance to divine authority. When instruction is offered, the fool turns away. When correction comes, the fool becomes offended. In doing so, the fool aligns himself with deception rather than truth.
God declares that such individuals go in a devilish direction, led by demons. This is not figurative language. Scripture consistently affirms that when truth is rejected, deception fills the void. Rebellion opens the heart to voices that masquerade as freedom but ultimately enslave. What begins as insistence on one’s own way ends in spiritual bondage and madness of soul.
Though God does not desire that men choose such a path, many persist because pride convinces them that submission is weakness. In reality, submission to God is wisdom, and rebellion is folly.

An Age of Rebellion and the Rejection of Godly Counsel
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.”
— 2 Timothy 4:3
The proliferation of fools in these times is directly tied to the rebellion of the age. Multitudes have rejected sound counsel and godly wisdom, replacing them with worldly rhetoric and human reasoning. These philosophies often sound enlightened, progressive, and compassionate, yet they are rooted in defiance against God’s authority.
Worldly wisdom promises life while producing death. Those who embrace it often believe they are thriving, even as they are losing their souls. This self-deception is one of the clearest marks of rebellion. To be losing while thinking one is fine is a dangerous spiritual condition, revealing how deeply pride has taken hold.
God exposes this defiance not to mock humanity, but to call them back to truth. The tragedy is not ignorance, but refusal to listen.
The Trap of Lies and the Counsel of the Liar
“Ye are of your father the devil… for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
— John 8:44
For many, collapsing into lies is the easiest path. Lies require no repentance, no humility, and no accountability. When people believe the liar, they become rebellious against God because they accept the counsel of the devil rather than the truth of their Creator.
Worldly wisdom flatters the ego, encouraging people to be wise in their own conceit. Yet God declares such individuals to be bound and blinded. What they consider freedom is actually entanglement. What they believe to be wisdom is foolishness. The easiest way becomes a snare that captures the soul.
This deception is subtle and persistent. It convinces people that rejecting God is rational and that obedience is outdated. In truth, such thinking accelerates spiritual ruin.
Blaming God and Rejecting Divine Comfort
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.”
— James 1:17
God speaks with grief about the many who blame Him for their sorrows and losses. This blame reveals deep deception. God is a good Father who cares for His people with great compassion. Evil, suffering, and destruction are not His work; they are the fruit of sin and the activity of the devil and his demonic forces.
To blame God while rejecting His comfort is profound irony. Those who cry out to God in humility receive mercy because they recognize their need. God delights in responding to the needy who look to Him as their source. Pride, however, prevents many from receiving the very help they require.
God does not reject the brokenhearted. He rejects pride, but He welcomes humility.
Coming Times of Exposure and Opposition
“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
— 2 Timothy 3:12
God warns that in coming times, the ugliness of rebellious hearts will be openly revealed. Those whose hearts are set against God will attempt to rule cruelly, seeking to dominate the masses and destroy all resistance. Hatred fuels their ambition, and pride intoxicates their reasoning.
God’s people are despised by fools because they belong to Him. The righteous stand as witnesses against rebellion, and for this reason they are targeted. Fools believe that by eliminating godliness, they will secure their power. In reality, they are hastening their own destruction.
Hard times, however, will drive many to God. When the lies collapse and the “easiest way” fails, souls will seek truth with renewed urgency.

The Illusion of Power, Riches, and Self-Reliance
“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches.”
— 1 Timothy 6:17
Many trust in power, wealth, and influence, believing these will secure their future. God calls such trust foolishness. Riches are unstable, fleeting, and incapable of saving the soul. Those who rely on them are building on shifting sand.
God reveals a sobering truth: many rich individuals end in destitution, despair, and even self-destruction. The enemy who whispers lies also whispers commands to kill, steal, and destroy—including self-destruction. Wealth without wisdom becomes a dangerous illusion.
No one takes riches into eternity. Every soul stands alone before God. History and Scripture testify that many wealthy men dwell in hell, having trusted in vanity rather than in God.
True Riches and the Safety of Humility
“Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.”
— Proverbs 28:6
True riches are not measured by possessions but by obedience, humility, and relationship with God. Those who walk humbly are shown the way of safety and security by the Holy Spirit. Trusting in self is the mark of ultimate folly; trusting in God is the beginning of wisdom.
God invites His people to walk the straight and narrow way, guided by the Spirit. In this path, believers discover a good life rooted in purpose, peace, and eternal hope. Gratitude sustains this walk, keeping the heart aligned with God’s goodness.
To abide among the redeemed is to dwell in blessing. To live in obedience is to possess true wealth.
Summary
This lesson reveals that foolishness is rebellion against God expressed through pride, rejection of correction, and trust in lies. Worldly wisdom deceives, riches fail, and self-reliance collapses. God, however, offers mercy, truth, and life through Jesus Christ. Those who walk humbly, receive instruction, and trust in God are preserved, guided, and enriched with true riches that endure eternally.

Conclusion
God finds no pleasure in folly, yet He extends mercy to all who will repent and return to Him. The choice remains before every soul: rebellion or obedience, pride or humility, madness or wisdom. The way of God is safe, sane, and life-giving. Those who choose it will never be put to shame.
Call to Action

Final Word of Encouragement
Be thankful that your eyes have been opened and your heart softened. You are not bound by deception nor trapped in folly. God has called you into wisdom, purpose, and eternal hope. Continue walking with Him, trusting His guidance, and rejoicing in the true riches He provides.
Salvation Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I acknowledge that without You I am lost. I confess that rebellion and pride lead only to destruction. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died for my sins, and that He rose again to give me new life. I repent of my sins and surrender my will to You. Cleanse me by the blood of Jesus and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Teach me to walk in humility, wisdom, and obedience. From this day forward, I choose Your way—the way of life and truth.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
