THE GLORY OF GOD DEPARTS WHEN SIN REIGNS By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: “Ichabod! The glory has departed from Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.” — 1 Samuel 4:21

Introduction

Throughout Scripture and human history, the presence and glory of God have always been the highest treasure and the deepest longing of every person who desires a genuine relationship with Him. The glory of God represents His divine presence, His nature, His covering, His protection, His holiness, and His power dwelling among His people. Whenever His glory is evident, there is victory, peace, guidance, and a flourishing of spiritual life. But whenever His glory departs, there is defeat, confusion, shame, spiritual dryness, and exposure to the destructive powers of darkness.

The message given in the prophetic text above reveals a sobering and urgent warning to the Church, to nations, and to individuals in this generation. God makes it clear that there are times when His glory withdraws from people—not because His power has diminished, but because their sins have created the conditions where His presence cannot rest. Just as it was in ancient Israel, so it is today. When people believe they can continue sinning without consequences, they enter deception, blindness, and destruction. The Lord reveals that sin, pride, rebellion, and self-righteousness cause His glory to lift, leading people into defeat and spiritual death.

Yet the message is also a call of hope: the glory of God remains upon all who have Christ genuinely dwelling in their hearts, who submit to the Holy Spirit, deny self, and walk in obedience. God’s glory is not maintained by religion, titles, ceremonies, or self-declared perfection, but through surrendered hearts, humble spirits, and daily obedience to the leading of the Spirit.

This lesson will explore deeply the nature of God’s glory, the danger of losing it, the deception of self-righteousness, the war between flesh and Spirit, and the call to return to full spiritual commitment. It will also show how believers must guard the new life within them, avoid comfortable complacency, and walk steadfastly in holiness, maintaining the presence of God until the end.

THE DANGER OF LOSING THE GLORY OF GOD

The departure of God’s glory is not sudden; it is gradual, caused by a decline in obedience, purity, and devotion. In ancient Israel, sin led to defeat and the departure of God’s presence.

“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you.” — Isaiah 59:2

God emphasizes that people who continue sinning blindly become fools headed toward destruction. Israel’s defeat by the Philistines illustrated how sin causes a spiritual vacuum where God’s glory and protection once stood. The same principle stands today.

Whenever individuals or communities tolerate sin, justify sin, or celebrate sin, they invite spiritual blindness, confusion, and eventual downfall. God’s glory lifts because He cannot coexist with rebellion and impurity.

The lesson is clear: The presence of God is maintained by holiness, but sin drives it away.

SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS: THE SUBTLE ENEMY OF GOD'S GLORY

Self-righteousness is one of the most deceptive forms of spiritual blindness. God warns that when people attempt to establish their own righteousness, they fall into wickedness because the flesh is the enemy of the Spirit.

“All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” — Isaiah 64:6

Many imagine they are perfect, believing every decision they make is justified. Yet without the Holy Spirit ruling their minds and hearts, such perfection is fake, rooted in pride. God calls it disgusting and shameful.

Self-made righteousness glorifies self instead of God. It seeks admiration from people rather than approval from Heaven. It denies the need for repentance, humility, and dependence on Christ. And when self-righteousness reigns, the glory of God withdraws.

The modern world is full of people attempting to “play god”—creating their own standards of morality, redefining righteousness, and rejecting divine truth. But these behaviors are inspired by demonic deception. They turn people away from humility and surrender and lead them into spiritual ruin.

THE GLORY OF GOD REMAINS ONLY IN CHRIST

The message makes it clear: the only hope of maintaining God’s glory is to have Christ living in the heart.

“Christ in you, the hope of glory.” — Colossians 1:27

Christianity is not merely outward religion; it is the indwelling presence of Jesus. People who refuse Christ—even if society considers them “good people”—are spiritually lost. Human goodness cannot save; only Christ saves.

There are multitudes whom the world praises as kind, gentle, generous, or honorable, yet they refused repentance and surrender to Jesus. God sees beyond appearances into secret sins, hidden thoughts, and inner motives. Many who seemed “good” ended in eternal destruction because they chose morality without Christ, ethics without repentance, and religion without salvation.

Therefore, the presence and glory of God remain only in lives surrendered to Jesus, directed by the Holy Spirit, and governed by obedience.

THE WAR BETWEEN THE FLESH AND THE SPIRIT

God warns that the flesh is criminal, corrupt, and perpetually opposed to the Spirit.

“For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.” — Galatians 5:17

The carnal nature desires control, comfort, pleasure, pride, and self-exaltation. It resists holiness, humility, obedience, and sacrifice. When people yield to their carnal impulses, they deviate from God’s path and lose His glory.

The Spirit leads toward righteousness; the flesh pulls toward rebellion. The Spirit produces life; the flesh produces death. The Spirit brings sanctification; the flesh brings corruption. The Spirit aligns us with God; the flesh aligns us with Satan’s deception.

Believers must recognize that maintaining the glory of God requires intentional spiritual warfare against the flesh, daily crucifixion of self, and consistent submission to the Holy Spirit.

COMPLACENT CHRISTIANITY AND THE LOSS OF GLORY

God warns against comfortable religious complacency. Many today are satisfied with church attendance, religious identity, and outward respectability, but their hearts are far from God.

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” — 2 Timothy 3:5

Complacent believers are spiritually lukewarm. They avoid sacrifice. They fear discomfort. They refuse full commitment. They rely on self instead of the Spirit. They choose convenience instead of obedience.

God describes such people as a stench—not because He hates them, but because spiritual laziness reveals a lack of true love, humility, and surrender. Their treasure is not in Heaven; it is in earthly security.

Comfort becomes their idol. Self becomes their god. Religion becomes their refuge. And when this happens, the glory of God quietly lifts away.

THE RESPONSIBILITY TO GUARD THE NEW LIFE OF CHRIST WITHIN

Just as a garden must be protected from weeds, so must believers guard their spiritual life. God warns that the carnal mind will continually attempt to rise up in false authority.

“Guard your heart with all diligence; for out of it spring the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23

If the believer becomes careless, worldly desires, sinful habits, and unrenewed thoughts will choke the new life they received at salvation. The weeds of pride, lust, anger, compromise, and disobedience can suffocate spiritual growth.

The glory of God is maintained not by passive belief but by active spiritual discipline:

Daily surrender.

Daily prayer.

Daily purity.

Daily obedience.

Daily listening to the Holy Spirit.

This is how the believer shines as a light in a dark world.

THE CALL TO REMAIN STEADFAST AND UNMOVED

God concludes with an urgent call: do not deviate from the path. The enemy will continually whisper temptations, lies, and excuses to the flesh. If believers listen to carnality instead of the Spirit, the glory of God will depart.

“Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” — 1 Corinthians 15:58

True glory does not come from worldly recognition, wealth, or influence. It comes from God alone. When His true glory rests upon a person, their life becomes a testimony that shines in a sin-sick world.

The message is clear: remain faithful, remain obedient, remain spiritually awake, and the glory of God will remain.

Summary

This lesson reveals that God’s glory departs when people cling to sin, pride, self-righteousness, or complacency. His presence remains only in those who embrace Christ, walk by the Spirit, deny the flesh, and live in full obedience. Maintaining the glory of God is a daily responsibility requiring humility, discipline, spiritual vigilance, and total surrender.

Conclusion

The destiny of every believer is determined by their choices—obedience or rebellion, surrender or pride, Christ or carnality. God desires His glory to remain in our lives, but we must guard it through holiness and full commitment. The way of self leads to destruction; the way of Christ leads to eternal life. Those who keep His glory will shine brightly in a world covered in darkness.

Salvation Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come before You in humility. I confess that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I repent of all my sins and I turn away from my old life. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe He died for my sins and rose again for my salvation. Today I receive Him as my Lord and Savior. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Cleanse me, transform me, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Help me to live in Your glory and walk in Your righteousness all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
