REFUSE TO SIN AGAIN: THE CALL TO LIVE IN TRUE FREEDOM By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

“Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” — Romans 6:1–2

INTRODUCTION

One of the most urgent messages that God gives to His people in this generation is the call to refuse the entanglements of sin and to walk in the freedom that Jesus Christ has provided. We are living in an age of unprecedented stress, tension, pressure, and spiritual warfare on every side. The systems of the world are collapsing, human ideologies are failing, and many hearts are turning to destructive habits, addictions, and generational sins that have plagued families for centuries.

Yet in the midst of darkness, God speaks clearly and powerfully: do not let sin suck you in again and again. The call is not merely a warning but an invitation to a higher way of living—a life governed by the Holy Spirit, rooted in divine strength, and established in the righteousness of Jesus Christ. This is a message of freedom, deliverance, hope, and restoration. It is a reminder that those who are born again of incorruptible seed are not destined to repeat the failures, addictions, and destructive patterns of their ancestors. They have access to a new life through the power of the Holy Spirit.

As God warns about the increased seduction of sin in times of pressure and anxiety, He also reveals the divine solution: seek Me, draw near to Me, and embrace My mercy. God calls His people away from misery and into mercy, away from destruction and into life, away from self-reliance and into complete dependence on Him. This lesson explores this divine message deeply and provides spiritual understanding on how believers can remain victorious and refuse to fall back into the bondage of sin.

THE DANGER OF RETURNING TO SIN

Sin has a way of drawing people back through deception, temptation, and emotional vulnerability. God says clearly that those who give in repeatedly to sin, refusing to resist, are choosing the path that leads to condemnation and destruction. Sin promises relief, but it delivers misery. It promises pleasure, but it produces pain. It promises escape, but it brings bondage.

God reminds us that many hide the idolatry of generational sins in their hearts. These bloodline sins may include addiction, immorality, anger, violence, deception, pride, or self-destructive habits passed down through family patterns. When stress arises, these sins attempt to resurface and take control.

However, through the new birth, believers have received a different seed—the incorruptible seed of the Word of God. As 1 Peter 1:23 declares, “being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” This means every believer has the divine ability to overcome generational curses and habits that once controlled their lives.

THE REALITY OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE UNDER PRESSURE

God reveals that this year is full of turmoil because wicked forces are terrified by the rise of righteousness. As the Holy Spirit advances His revolution for righteousness, the devil increases his attempts to draw people back into sin. The enemy promises stress relief, emotional escape, and temporary comfort, but he never reveals the consequences. The devil’s offers always produce deeper misery, confusion, and spiritual suffocation.

Jesus warns us in John 10:10, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” When people choose sin as a coping mechanism, they are inviting destruction into their lives. Yet God offers mercy, miracles, and supernatural strength. He invites His people to seek Him sincerely during times of tension.

In Psalm 46:1, scripture declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Believers must learn to run to God instead of running back to sin.

THE CYCLE OF HUMAN MISERY AND THE FAILURE OF WORLDLY CONFIDENCE

God exposes the emptiness of worldly pursuits. Many place their trust in things that will eventually pass away—wealth, work, achievements, or material possessions. Others chase worldly pleasures in search of peace. But none of these can satisfy the deep hunger of the human soul.

The father who works endlessly to provide financial security for his family ends up neglecting the emotional and relational needs of his spouse and children. His loved ones receive money, but not love. They receive possessions, but not presence. They have material comfort but suffer emotional emptiness.

Ecclesiastes 1:2 reveals the truth of worldly pursuits: “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”

God wants His people to understand that true satisfaction, safety, and security cannot be found in earthly achievements but in Him alone. As Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”

THE CALL TO TRUE FREEDOM IN CHRIST

God’s call is not to misery but to mercy. Not to destruction but to restoration. Jesus calls all who are weary and trapped in the cycle of sin to come to Him and find rest. As written in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Christ offers forgiveness, freedom, spiritual clarity, and deliverance. He breaks chains and restores dignity. He provides the inner strength that human willpower alone cannot produce.

Those who are born again are called to walk in the newness of life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things become new.” This means believers are not called to repeat the same destructive patterns of the past. They are called to walk in victory.

RESISTING TEMPTATION AND REFUSING TO RETURN TO DARKNESS

God gives clear instruction: if you have been freed from sin, do not allow the devil to entice you back. The enemy uses old temptations, familiar weaknesses, and ancestral patterns to pull people backward. But believers must resist. Scripture commands in James 4:7, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

The key to remaining in victory is consistent fellowship with God. The more believers focus on Jesus, the stronger they become in the Spirit. It is through gratitude, worship, prayer, and testimony that believers maintain freedom. The more one speaks about the goodness of God, the less room sin has to return.

THE CALL TO WITNESS AND LIVE AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT

God calls His people to bear witness of the new life they have in Christ. Those who testify of God’s goodness reinforce their own spiritual strength. Declaring the works of God is not just for evangelism; it is also a spiritual shield.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Believers are not called to take on the world’s identity or its sinful coverings. They are called to live under the covering of God’s grace, walking in purity, faith, and obedience.

God’s message to His people is clear: refuse to return to sin. Do not allow stress, pressure, or ancestral habits to draw you back into bondage. The devil uses deception and false promises to lure people into cycles of destruction, but Christ provides true freedom. Believers must resist temptation, walk in dependence on the Holy Spirit, and maintain a lifestyle of worship, gratitude, and testimony. True security and peace are found only in God, not in worldly pursuits. The call is to live as victors, not victims.
