CALLED TO FOLLOW: WALKING UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN AN AGE OF DECEPTION By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
(John 10:27)

INTRODUCTION
From the beginning of God’s dealings with humanity, the issue has never merely been belief, but leadership—who leads, who follows, and by what spirit a person walks. The message before us is a solemn, loving, and corrective call from the Living God to His people, reminding them that they were never called to lead themselves, nor to invent their own paths, but to follow. To follow God is not weakness; it is wisdom. It is not limitation; it is safety. It is not bondage; it is life.
In an age marked by spiritual confusion, deception, pride, and independence, many have mistaken self-direction for maturity and ambition for calling. The Lord speaks clearly to confront this error. Every person is being led by something or someone. No one is truly autonomous. Those who reject the leadership of the Holy Spirit do not become free; they become led by spirits of independence, vanity, deception, and pride—spirits that ultimately lead to destruction.
This lesson reveals that following God requires humility, patience, discernment, and obedience. It requires waiting upon the Lord, listening to the counsel of the Holy Spirit, and continuing steadfastly in the steps of Jesus Christ. The Lord exposes the danger of false spirits, independent mindsets, worldly ambition, and the craving for recognition. He contrasts these with the beauty, safety, and glory of being led by the Spirit of God.
At the heart of this teaching is a call back to spiritual alignment. God is calling His people out of self-will and back into shepherded living—where Christ is the example, the Holy Spirit is the guide, and the Father is the source. This lesson is both a warning and an invitation: a warning against the way of fools and an invitation into the straight and narrow path that leads to life.

THE CALL TO FOLLOW AND THE NATURE OF TRUE DISCIPLESHIP
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
(Luke 9:23)

God begins by reminding His people of their calling. They are called to follow, not to rush ahead, not to lag behind, and not to assume mastery over their own direction. To follow means to wait upon the Lord, to listen attentively, and to move only as the Holy Spirit leads. Following is an act of trust and surrender, acknowledging that God knows more than we do and sees farther than we can.
True discipleship is not self-guided spirituality. It is Spirit-led obedience. Many stumble because they believe they know more than they truly know. Pride blinds discernment and dulls spiritual hearing. God warns against this subtle deception and calls His people back to humility.
Jesus Christ Himself modeled perfect followership. Though He was the Son, He did nothing independently of the Father. He followed the Father’s will completely, submitting to divine timing, divine instruction, and divine purpose. To follow in the steps of Christ is to reject independence and embrace divine leadership.

THE DANGER OF FOLLOWING DECEIVING SPIRITS
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”
(1 Timothy 4:1)

The Lord exposes a sobering reality: multitudes are following spirits of falsehood, vanity, and deception. These spirits present themselves attractively, often cloaked in religious language, charisma, ambition, or personal revelation. Yet their destination is always the same—destruction and damnation.
God makes it clear that choosing any path outside His life is choosing death. Those led by deceiving spirits may feel empowered, enlightened, or self-assured, but they are walking the way of fools. The tragedy is that many do not realize they are deceived until they are deeply entangled.
False spirits do not announce themselves as false. They appeal to pride, independence, and personal importance. They promise greatness without submission and calling without obedience. God warns His people not to underestimate these dangers and not to confuse self-direction with divine guidance.

THE ILLUSION OF INDEPENDENCE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”
(Proverbs 14:12)

One of the most deceptive traps in these times is the spirit of independence. Those who claim to lead themselves believe they are free, but in reality, they are being led by unseen forces. Independence from God is not neutrality; it is rebellion. It leads people into spiritual ditches, moral mires, and the sucking sands of sin.
God declares that no one is truly self-led. Every life is under influence. When people reject the leadership of the Holy Spirit, they come under the influence of pride, ambition, and deception. These spirits isolate individuals from fellowship, accountability, and truth.
Independence often masquerades as calling. Some forsake God-ordained fellowship, claiming they have a “greater vision” or a “higher calling.” Others imagine themselves saviors or redeemers, unable to submit or follow. God exposes this as deception, reminding His people that even Jesus was not independent of the Father.

THE BLESSING AND SAFETY OF BEING LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
(Romans 8:14)
________________________________________
In contrast to deception and independence, God reveals the beauty of being led by His Spirit. Those who desire God’s leadership are led in mercy, goodness, and truth. The Holy Spirit reveals the straight and narrow path, guiding believers away from sin and toward life.
Following the Spirit is not shameful; it is honorable. God’s kingdom is majestic, holy, and glorious. To be led by God is a privilege, not a limitation. Those eager to please God willingly cast off besetting sins and walk joyfully in obedience.
Gratitude marks those who are truly Spirit-led. They recognize the mercy of being guided and the protection found in obedience. Their lives bear fruit because they walk under divine direction rather than personal impulse.

THE TRAGEDY OF WORLDLY AMBITION AND EMPTY WORKS
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.”
(Psalm 127:1)
________________________________________
God addresses another sobering reality: many have built impressive works that appear successful by worldly standards, yet they are empty in God’s sight. These works are driven by ambition, recognition, and the desire to be admired. Though expansive and expensive, they are vain because they were not birthed by the Spirit of God.
Worldly-mindedness separates people from God. It teaches self-reliance, self-promotion, and self-preservation. Those under its influence grow weary of the Spirit’s guidance because it does not offer worldly applause. They seek approval from people rather than affirmation from God.
God warns His people not to seek the world’s approval. The world honors pride, ambition, and independence, but God honors humility, obedience, and faithfulness.

CHOOSING DAILY TO FOLLOW AND TRUST GOD’S VENGEANCE
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”
(Proverbs 3:5)
________________________________________
Following God is not a one-time decision; it is a daily choice. Each day, believers must choose God’s way over the world’s way. They must resist the temptation to fight their own battles, seek revenge, or assert control.
God reminds His people that vengeance belongs to Him. When believers attempt to fight in their own strength, they lose—not only peace but also spiritual clarity. Bitterness and resentment become taskmasters. By contrast, those who trust God’s justice remain free, healed, and secure.
There are ways that appear right to human reasoning, yet they do not follow Christ. God calls His people to continual dependence, trusting His wisdom above their own perceptions.

SUMMARY
This lesson reveals that every person is following something or someone. God’s people are called to follow the Holy Spirit, not deceiving spirits, independence, or worldly ambition. The way of God is marked by humility, obedience, fellowship, and trust. The way of independence leads to deception, isolation, and destruction. Following Christ brings safety, purpose, and life.

CONCLUSION
God’s call to follow is a call back to spiritual order, safety, and truth. In times of darkness and decay, the greatest protection is submission to the Holy Spirit. Those who follow God are kept, guided, and preserved. Those who refuse His leadership choose their own downfall. The way of life remains open to all who will humble themselves and follow.

SALVATION PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
I come before You acknowledging that I cannot lead myself. I repent of every way I have walked in pride, independence, and self-will. I choose to turn from deception and follow You. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died for my sins, and that He rose again to give me eternal life. Forgive me, cleanse me, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Lead me in the way of truth, keep me from deceiving spirits, and help me to follow You faithfully all the days of my life.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
